Review – Waterpik Dental Jet
Monday, November 16th, 2009I was contacted recently about reviewing a product for Waterpik. I got to choose between the Dental Jet or the Shower Head. The family decided that we wanted to try out the Dental Jet. On Friday, it arrived.

As you can see it is something that is to be plugged in. That’s an added plus for me because I am not a big fan of using alot of batteries. And rechargeables are expensive as it is, so if I can avoid batteries I am pleased. The blue container is where you can put water or mouthwash. The top lid opens up to hold the attachments.

There are 6 attachments that come with the Dental Jet; toothbrush, tongue scraper, 2 standard Jet tips, a Pik Pocket tip, and orthodontic tip. Changing the tips is pretty easy.

In the picture above you can see a small blue button on the side. You press that and it easily pops out. To put one in is equally as easy, just push it in until it clicks into place. The large button you see above is the pause button. All of the attachments shoot out water, if you need to take a break for a minute you push that button.
So when we received the Waterpik, I set about getting things set up. Absolutely no problems whatsoever! And the fact that it doesn’t take up that much space on the counter is another added plus. After dinner we tested how it worked. The removable water/mouthwash container was easy to pop out and fill up, we tried it with water. It takes just a minute to play with the pressure settings to get something comfy. Actually I thought it took less than a minute, lol. First I used the Pik Pocket and was pleasantly surprised at how much food was being removed from my teeth. Flossing only seems to get so much, this got much more loose. And it helped alot on the molars, something I find difficult to reach with regular floss. Even more difficult when I am trying to floss the kids teeth! After that I used the tongue scraper. Using water didn’t feel very effective. For tongue scraping I think that it would be better to use mouthwash in the container for a fresher cleaner feeling. Next I used the tooth brush. Since we were out of mouthwash, I had to use toothpaste (which is ok according to the booklet with the Dental Jet). I quickly discovered that you should hold down the pause button and get a good toothpaste foam started up in your mouth. Otherwise you lose your toothpaste quickly from the water stream. Again, this may be a situation where it would be better to use mouthwash in the container and skip the toothpaste all together. Anywho I found a way to work with it and really didn’t find it a major bother.
After much sanitizing of the attachments I did have each of the kids and Mr.P use the product as well. The kids loved it and I am not real surprised. It’s something new and time will tell if we go back to having toothbrushing battles again. After 4 days though, they are still excited to use it.
Mr.P and I actually share the same viewpoints on the Dental Jet. The container for water/mouthwash was a bit small. We had to refill it for each use. Given that we used water that isn’t that much of a big deal. If we use mouthwash we will be going through ALOT of mouthwash. However, upon going over the Waterpik website I found that they make a family version that features a larger water/mouthwash container but fewer attachments. So that could be a better option for families. The model we tried out would be more suited for couples or single persons.
Another thing we noticed was that the lid only had room for four attachments instead of all six. It was something that left us kind of scratching our heads. To us, it would make sense to have room for all six. In reality, it’s not that big of a deal for us as….and this is the next issue we noticed…..we didn’t use ALL the attachments. Pik Pocket, Tongue Scraper, and Toothbrush was what we stuck with. We plan on trying out the other attachments in the next week just to see how it goes. If they don’t really create a clean feeling then we will probably tuck those attachments away and not worry about it.
The last thing Mr. P & I discussed was how clean our teeth feel. I, honestly, haven’t felt that clean in awhile. It doesn’t take long either. I was worried that I was going to end up spending 30 minutes using all the attachments during my morning/evening routine. Actually, I was done in 10 minutes. It feels good to use the items. There is no discomfort and the clean feeling afterwards is just wonderful.
Cost – of course we have to discuss cost. As of publishing this post, the Dental Jet was $59.99. I know that for some of my readers this is alot. I know that if I were to consider buying this product, the cost would be weighing on my mind. However, having gotten the opportunity to test the product out I have to say that it’s worth it. This product could save you lots more in the future. Given how thoroughly it cleans the teeth, I could easily suggest that one could avoid some costly dental visits in the future. Also I have to mention at time of publishing this post, they have a coupon to help save a little bit on the Dental Jet. And of course, you could always ask for a Dental Jet for a birthday or holiday gift!
