Hot Peppers and Apple Preserves

So I got what I needed to make Hot Pepper and Apple Preserves from the store last night. I am very pleased with this particular preserves even though I cannot eat it. I am someone who thinks Taco Bell’s mild sauce is spicey. There is no way I can eat jalapenos! Anywho I am going to share with you how to make this lovely preserve for the pepper fanatic in your life. The original recipe is linked above. I made a couple changes so what I post here is just what I did. You can try following the original recipe if you want.

First off I started out chopping up 5 habanero peppers
habaneros step 1

Then I chopped up 15 jalapeno peppers
jalepenos step 2

Next I chopped up 15 Granny Smith apples. I was concerned because I did chop them up pretty large. Don’t worry, it will break up when cooked!

Next get out a large pot. Place 5 cups of sugar and 2 cups of water in the pot. Stir until well mixed. Place on the stove and bring to a boil. Turn heat down to medium and let cook for 15 minutes. Then add your apples.

Stir them up just a bit and throw your peppers on top

You want to cook for 35-40 minutes at a gentle boil, stirring occasionally. I ended up turning up the heat to med high and even placing my lid on the pot. Be very careful doing so. I did find a few burnt carmelized sugar peices on the bottom of my pot. Upon the taste testing done by my pepper loving husband he assured me there was no burnt taste. However, use some caution!

When finished cooking place in your canning jars (if your not canning you will have ALOT so find a large bowl with a lid to put it in). I personally got 3 quart jars and 8 pint jars.

I know for some of us, the pepper and apple combination sounds strange/weird/gross but we have already given thought to some ideas:

Top porkchops
Make pork tacos
Put on a bagel with some cream cheese
Mix with cream cheese for a spicy dip

**Edited with friends suggestions**
Use instead of mayo on a ham sandwich
Serve with Brie or as a topping to the Brie

If you use this recipe and come up with new ways to use it, please let me know. I would like to update the “ways to eat” list in case anyone comes back in the future and wants to try the recipe.
