So if you hadn’t heard the President of the US visited my town over the weekend for a short vacation. Just he and the first lady, the kids didn’t come this time. I love the fact that he chose our town. I may bitch about the righties in town but really we are unique. Despite our differences we are the most accepting community that can be with such a staunch political divide. We are also known for being a “foodie” town, and that’s probably why I am so fat. We got good eating around these parts and plenty to choose from. The first place they chose was 12 Bones, one of the best bbq places we have. It’s even won awards on Good Morning America.
As you can see, they are normal people and I think that is his appeal. Even for those who don’t agree with his politics (and I certainly don’t and I voted for him). Now speculation is, will he retire here? Who knows but he would be welcomed that’s for sure.
With someone like the Pres coming, I can’t help but notice some of the uncool things people do. There is no doubt that standing on the side of the road waiting for him to drive through is awesome. Yep, I totally got swept up in it and camped out. I missed him but that is another blog post (and I am not so sure that I will blog about it). I think it’s cool the community came out to cheer him on down the road. A daycare up the street from my office had made a sign with the kids and it was ADORABLE!
Those things are awesome. What isn’t awesome? The local news station encouraging people to resort to stalkerish behavior for a chance to be interviewed. Ok here is my thing….the man is on vacation (not that he is ever REALLY on vacation). It’s just a couple days, leave him alone! It’s not cool standing in your yard taking video of him golfing. When the news station interviews someone who videos him and Michelle at the Biltmore Estate, it makes me wonder if they really are excited about meeting and seeing the Pres or if they want to land an interview for their five minutes of fame. I have met a few celebs in my life (no, not a pres so maybe that disqualifies me) all they want is to be treated like a normal human being. And let’s not hide behind “they should expect this treatment”, that’s a cop out for not taking responsibility for your own actions. I gaurantee if you got followed around for a month with cellphones, cameras, and video cams in your face you would get annoyed quickly. Sure, you might like it for a day or so but after that….nope. How about tweeting your every move? Ok, I got it with the motorcade, THAT makes sense……but do I really need to know that he was golfing Saturday morning? Or watch 3 hours of speculation on whether or not he would go to Biltmore Estate. And seriously…..Do NOT tweet that the Pres should visit the 70% off sale at Ruby’s Furniture Shack!! That one really took the cake!
As I tell my kids on a daily basis……treat people as you wish to be treated. When you go on vacation you want rest and relaxation. So does the Pres.
