I have spent most of my time assuming that the UK was one of the most liberal countries out there. Apparently I was wrong and gave them more credit than they are due. This past week I have seen articles rebuking the decision to allow police of the pagan persuasion being granted our Holy Days off. One even suggested that people will now have to worry about if they can call the police for help if it fell on a pagan Holy Day. Really? What, are ALL police in the UK pagan??? I mean in order to actually have to worry about whether cops can break up a domestic because maybe it’s Litha that day would denote that all cops or well over 50% of them are pagan. Let’s assume that less than 50% of them are pagan, does that mean that before people were terrified they might need a cop on Christmas or Easter because those darned Christians got their Holy Days off??
There is another article out today that offers some new insight to the decision, although I find the tone of the article still snarky. They at least bring up the fact that having officers of pagan faiths (as well as Muslims which is brought up often) can offer a balance to the police force and help battle discrimination. I am still sitting in shock at my disillusionment from all these years. These are the kind of articles I expect to come out of Southeast USA, not the UK.
