The Joys of Horror Movies
Most of you know that I love horror movies, if you are new then now you know. Molly has begun proclaiming herself to be a fan of horror movies. She found the original Nightmare on Elm Street and George Romero’s Night Of The Living Dead boring. We watched the 2009 Friday the 13th which we both found boring and I found to be a dispicable excuse of a “remake” (how the hell is it a remake when they start off at the end of the original????). So yesterday the original Friday the 13th arrived via Netflix. I was so excited because it is one of my all time favorites. There are still scenes that make me jump, gasp, even scream a little bit. So we watched and Molly appeared a bit bored with it. She did go through the “rules” and almost had it figured out who survived. She couldn’t figure out the killer though, she was sure it was a man. I think that comes with the fact that she has heard of Jason Vorhees the hockey-mask-wearing machete-weilding freak of nature. At the end when the last chick is on the lake in the boat she was ready to turn off the movie and I insisted she wait and watch what happened next. She said she wasn’t in the mood for the sappy stuff. I replied with “but baby this will really excite you”. LOL sure enough when little Jason lept out of the water and grabbed the chick to drag her into the water, my daughter flew back into the couch, screamed, and declared that she will not watch another horror movie again. I couldn’t help it, I just sat and laughed so hard. Not so much that we scared her to death but because that was my same reaction when I first saw it at her age. We picked on her a little bit. I had previously warned her that when we went camping she would remember the movie quite well. Sure enough she has declared that she won’t go camping this summer (yea she will). She spent the rest of the night quite jumpy and we inadvertenly (and in the case of her father, very much so on purpose) scared her.
This morning she is fine. She said no nightmares and she won’t give up horror movies. Although she is in no mood to watch a horror movie today. I was the same way when I was a kid. It’s a love/hate relationship. It’s enjoyable experiencing the adrenaline rush from being scared out of your mind and yet the intense feeling of fear isn’t always so great. I don’t get scared that much anymore, more like I freak out in the moment. Usually within minutes of finishing the movie I am fine and ready to watch another.
Before the movie last night Molly insisted she wanted to work through the Saw movies. I kept warning her not yet, those are an intense mind bender. Now that little Jason has scared her to death, she is in no rush and that is good. It will take her some time. I am not sure what we will introduce her to next. I am thinking the original Psycho would be good.

i love the friday the 13th movies. started watching them super, super young, and had minimal problems. i will admit, though, that i didn’t sleep for damn near a week after my first nightmare on elm street.

Oy Freddy did the same thing to me! And Black Christmas (1978 version). I went and put The Bad Seed in the queue at Netflix. Our next horror film coming is My Bloody Valentine but it’s like #12 or something. We got some kids and documentary stuff first.
I LOVED Freddy… Never cared much for Jason… But I thought the saw movies were just gross… I can’t watch movies that are that… gratuitous.

I was the same way until I watched the Saw flicks. I still have to cover my eyes alot but the plot is really fascinating in a scary sort of way. I still prefer gore-less movies the most though.
