I Can Sew?
I was taking inventory of the Halloween stuff (not done yet) yesterday and came across some fabric I had. I think I had bought this stuff to make no-sew-pillows with. I don’t know, I have had this stuff a couple of years lol. Anywho I have a couple different Halloween themed fabrics and wondered what to do. That’s when I thought, hmmm tarot bags. Then I wondered if I had a brain tumor pressing on the brain and causing me to be delusional. See, I don’t know how to sew. I worked in men’s formal wear for several years and I knew enough to sew on a button or tack up a sleeve at last minute IF our seamstress wasn’t there. But that’s the extent of it. I took Home Economics in Junior High School but I am old now and can’t remember last week let alone 22 years ago. I know I sewed a pillow back then, I also know it fell apart before the end of the school year. So see…..I can’t sew.
Anywho I set about trying to figure out how to construct a bag. I figured the easiest way would be to take two pieces and sew it together. Easy enough! But then I realized, how the hell was I going to close the bag???????? I have no buttons (because this was a whim thing, not like I was prepared) and so I found some ribbon and decided to make it draw string. I made crooked slits along the top about a half inch from the top. I turned everything inside out and set about sewing up the two sides and bottom, with my emergency sewing kit. I have to say, it’s not that hard AND I got through it fairly quickly. Here is what I created:
Isn’t it cute???? The other side has Frankenstein and Skeleton squarely in the middle but it was closeout fabric and had a mark on it in that spot so I didn’t take a picture of that side. Anywho, not too shabby! I learned a few things on the way to improve my sewing to make it stronger. This one is a bit big for a tarot deck. I have a large deck and it’s got lots of room in there. So really it could be used as a gift bag or storage bag or whatever someone can come up with.
I got bored later in the day and was eying the fabric again. I have some that will require a liner because it’s so thin and fragile. One of them is this cool god fabric with spiderwebs and spiders on it. So I decided, eh why not. I made another bag lol. This one I cut smaller and is perfect size for a large tarot deck. I could not however add ribbon so I decided not to worry about closing this one at all. Oh and I used black fleece to line it with.
This one I like not being able to close. I love the spider web motif, I really do. BUT, I need to center it better so that you can see the spiders better lol. One thing you all cannot see is that one side I had cut crooked on the gold fabric (not the fleece) and so it didn’t get sewn up well and is coming apart. Lesson learned. I am definetly going to make some more today.
