If you have ever been curious about the New Orleans style of Voodoo, this is the perfect book. There is some short explanation of the different Voodoo traditions but the book is specifically about New Orleans Voodoo. It covers the syncretism of Catholicism to the African Diaspora and the loa. It also offers quite a few spells, oils, inks, tools, and herbs that are used in Hoodoo (which is the magical practice, Voodoo is the religion!). I really felt that Denise Alvarado went to great lengths to explain the religion and it’s magical practices.
